Editorial Standards & Independence
How Groove Weight stays independent: affiliate commissions fund the site at no extra cost to you and never buy a recommendation. We rank on specs, value, and owner consensus, and tell you plainly when the best gear isn't one we can link to.

An independent buying guide has exactly one asset: its judgment. If you cannot trust that our recommendations are ours, shaped by the gear and not by who pays us, then nothing else on Groove Weight is worth your time. This page is the plain-language account of how we make money, what that money does not touch, and how we stay independent, so you can decide for yourself whether to take our word.
Where the money comes from
Groove Weight is funded by affiliate commissions. When you follow a link from one of our articles to a retailer and buy something, we may earn a small commission, and, the part that matters, you pay exactly the same price whether or not you use our link. There is no markup, no surcharge, nothing added to your cost. Those commissions pay for the research and writing you are reading. We are grateful when you use our links and equally fine when you do not; the choice never changes your price and never changes our advice.
The wall between the payout and the pick
Here is the line we hold: what we earn on a product has no bearing on whether we recommend it. We choose what to cover and how to rank it from the specs, the value at the price, and the weight of owner consensus, never from which retailer pays more or which item carries a fatter commission. When the best cartridge in a band is one we earn little or nothing on, it still gets the nod. We would rather forfeit a sale than steer you toward a worse deck to make a few more cents, because the instant a ranking bends to the payout, the ranking is worthless and so are we.
When the best gear is not one we can link
Vinyl has an honest complication: some of the finest gear, certain high-end decks and amplifiers, is sold mainly through authorized dealers rather than the retailers we link to. We refuse to let that distort a review. When a product we rate highly is hard to point you to, we say so directly and name the closest alternatives we can genuinely stand behind, rather than burying the recommendation or manufacturing a link that does not deserve to exist. A useful "here is what you can actually buy today" beats a dead end dressed up as advice.
Honesty about facts, not just money
Independence is one half of trust; not making things up is the other. We hold a firm no-fabrication rule: no invented specifications, no fake hands-on testing, no credentials we do not hold. Our recommendations come out of the research process described on our how we test turntables and hi-fi gear page, and that process never consults a commission rate. Money-independence and fact-honesty are really the same promise seen from two sides, one about who we answer to, one about what we claim to know.
Prices, and why we keep them loose
Because hi-fi pricing shifts week to week and models are refreshed without announcement, we do not present a fixed price as a settled fact. We describe bands, and any live figure we show comes from current data rather than a number frozen into the page months ago. We ask you to confirm the current price and generation at the retailer before you buy; it protects you from acting on a figure that has since moved, and it keeps us honest about a market we do not set.
Talk to us, and correct us
We especially want to hear from you when we are wrong. If a spec has drifted, a link is broken, or a recommendation no longer holds up, tell us and we will fix or flag it. Reader corrections are one of the most reliable ways our coverage stays current as gear is discontinued and revised. Holding us to these standards is not an imposition; it is the mechanism that keeps the site worth trusting.
The commitment, in one line
Put simply: optional commissions that never buy a recommendation, judgments drawn from specs and consensus, and prices you should always verify yourself. When we fall short of that, tell us. An independent guide runs entirely on earned trust, and everything above is how we try to earn yours.
Asked about this deck
Do you earn money when I buy through your links?
We may earn a small affiliate commission at no additional cost to you, since the price is identical whether or not you use our link. Those commissions fund the site's research and writing. Using them is appreciated and entirely optional, and it never affects what you pay or what we recommend.
Does a higher commission ever change your ranking?
No. Rankings come from specs, value at the price, and owner consensus, and the best pick in a band wins even when we earn nothing on it. The moment our advice bent toward the bigger payout it would stop being advice, so we keep the payout out of the decision entirely.
What if the best product isn't one you can link to?
We tell you outright and point you to the nearest alternatives we can honestly recommend. Some excellent vinyl gear sells mainly through authorized dealers we do not work with; rather than hide it or fake a link, we name it, explain the situation, and give you a path you can actually act on.
