Turntables · Cartridges · Hi-Fi — reviewed to spec
Plan the whole chain, one stage at a time.
Explore the stages between a record and your speakers. Our guides compare published specifications, and the System Matcher offers a starting shortlist by room and budget preferences. Check exact model compatibility and current retailer prices before ordering.
Groove to ear, stage by stage
No complete chain is priced on the rack right now, so there is no total to quote. Each stage still opens its ranked lane.
Side A
Build the chain
Give the System Matcher your room and your budget preferences. It suggests one candidate per stage using a fixed catalog and explains which setup checks remain. A shortlist is a starting point, not a tested system or a current-price quote.

Liner notes
Do I need a phono preamp?
Yes — a turntable outputs a tiny, RIAA-equalized signal that a normal line input can’t use. You need a phono stage somewhere in the chain: built into the turntable, built into the amplifier (a "PHONO" input), or a separate box. If none of those exist, add an external phono preamp.
Belt or direct drive for beginners?
Either works. Belt drive (Rega, Fluance, Pro-Ject) isolates motor noise well and suits pure listening. Direct drive (Technics, AT-LP120X) starts instantly, holds speed tightly, and is the choice if you want pitch control or ever DJ. Pick on features, not dogma.
MM vs MC — which cartridge for me?
Start with moving magnet (MM). It’s cheaper, has a user-replaceable stylus, and works with any phono stage. Moving coil (MC) can resolve more detail but costs more, needs a higher-gain MC input, and isn’t user-repairable. MC is an endgame move, not a first step.
What’s a good budget full system?
The floor is a deck with a phono stage built in and a cartridge already fitted (the AT-LP120X is the usual pick) into powered speakers like the Edifier R1280T, plus a brush and a stylus gauge. That is a complete system you can upgrade one box at a time. Listings move, so we do not quote a price here: the System Matcher prices a chain from current listings for your budget and room.
