About · the listening room

Independent, to spec, no stock to push

Groove Weight is the measurement-honest buying reference the vinyl revival never built for itself — a spec row per deck, a page per budget, and a shortlist to investigate for your room.

The vinyl world runs on folklore. We’d rather run on numbers. Every turntable, cartridge, phono stage, amplifier and speaker we cover is judged on the same repeatable sheet — wow-and-flutter and rumble, cartridge output against phono gain, speaker sensitivity against amplifier power and room size — so gear compares on axes, not adjectives.

We hold no stock and take no payment for placement. When you buy through a link we may earn an affiliate commission at no extra cost to you, and that’s the only way the site is funded. It never changes a ranking or the price you pay. The full policy is in our editorial standards, and how we rate gear is spelled out in our methodology.

The piece that ties the site together is the System Matcher: room and budget preferences in, a shortlist from a fixed catalog out. It identifies component stages; exact compatibility, phono settings and acoustic headroom still require checks against the manufacturers’ guidance.

Who’s behind the needle

A small team with clearly split beats. Our writing is research- and spec-synthesis-led: we pull manufacturer figures, work the setup, and weigh them against what long-term owners actually report.

Reviews Lead — Turntables & Setup

Leads Groove Weight’s turntable coverage and wrote the side-by-side spec protocol its deck reviews run on — belt and direct drive, automatic and manual, USB and pure analog. Structures every review on repeatable dial-in measures so decks compare on axes, not adjectives.

Front-end-first by policy; decks judged on axes, not adjectives.

  • Nadia Okonkwo

    Signal & Speakers Editor

Maintains the Groove Weight phono-stage and speaker spec library, documenting gain, cartridge loading, sensitivity and room-fit on one fixed method so a chain matches rather than merely connects. Owns the care and storage consumable ladder.

Matches the chain end to end; care judged on protection, not looks.
