Turntables, tonearms, cartridges & styli, setup and calibration, the upgrade path
Marius owns the turntable side of Groove Weight and wrote the spec protocol the site runs on. His method is deliberately unglamorous: pull the manufacturer’s published figures, work through the setup — tracking force, anti-skate, azimuth, VTA — then weigh wow-and-flutter, rumble and channel separation against what long-term owners actually report across r/vinyl, forums and retailer feedback.
He structures every deck review on that comparison, across belt and direct drive, automatic and manual, USB and pure analog — which is how the site catches the gap between a spec sheet and a listening room: the tonearm that can’t track what a pricier stylus resolves, the “upgrade” cartridge that outclasses the deck under it.
He reviews brand-agnostically and argues for spending on the front end first — the deck and tonearm before the cartridge, the cartridge before the phono stage.
Front-end-first by policy; decks judged on axes, not adjectives.
