Speaker & Amp Matching
Sensitivity, impedance and watts — how to pair speakers to a room.
Powered or passive, bookshelf or floor, and how sensitivity, impedance and amplifier power fit together so a system matches rather than merely connects. Room size is the spec everyone forgets.

Asked & answered
Powered or passive speakers?
Powered speakers (Edifier R1280T) have the amp built in — plug the turntable’s preamp output straight in, done. Passive speakers (KEF Q150, Micca RB42) need a separate amplifier but scale higher and let you upgrade each piece. Powered for simplicity, passive for ceiling.
How many watts do I need?
Fewer than the marketing suggests. In a normal room, 30–50 watts per channel into typical bookshelf speakers plays louder than you’ll want. What matters more is matching the amp’s power to the speaker’s sensitivity and impedance, not chasing a big number.
Bookshelf or floorstanding speakers?
Bookshelves suit most rooms and desks, image beautifully, and pair with a small amp. Floorstanders (Klipsch RP-8000F) move more air for big rooms and low bass but demand space and power. In an apartment, a good bookshelf plus a small sub beats a cramped floorstander.
